DESCRIPTION OF THE BUILDING | Located in the heart of the commercial center of the historic town of Corfu, the church of Saint Ioannis o Prodromos is adjacent to Nikiforos Theotokis Street, opposite the public open space widely known as “Kypriakou Agonos” Square. The church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, like the many churches of Corfu, belongs to the style of the single-aisled Basilica with a tile-covered gable roof. The church was built in the 15th century (1480) and its exterior is simple without shutters on the windows. Characteristic architectural elements of the church are the bell tower with the perforated wall, and the stepped roof. On the west, south and north sides, the church is surrounded by an exonarthex. The main church, elevated in relation to the perimeter corridor, is illuminated by the semicircular windows that are on its long sides. On the exonarthex there are some wall paintings and several epitaphs, one of which covers the tomb of a Russian navy officer, who died in 1799, and another, which bears the inscription "Here lays the Holy Michael" which is from the tomb of one of the priests of the church. The original structure was extended vertically and horizontally during a later building phase, from 1757 to 1760. With regards to the belfry, which has the form of a pierced wall, it was repaired in 1784, demolished in 1804 and reconstructed in 1807. The interior of the church is decorated with icons, some of which are works of renowned religious painters of the time, such as Em. Tzane Bountalis and G. Chrisoloras (17th and 18th centuries).
