DESCRIPTION OF THE BUILDING | This public building was erected in 1911 in a new urban district which was created according to the designs of the Corfiot architect Ioannis Chronis during the expansion of the town of Corfu in the 19th century Its main entrance is situated on the main street of Alexandras and the open space (back yard) of the property extends to the parallel street, named after the great benefactor Grigorios Maraslis, who financed the construction of the building. It is one of the most characteristic buildings of neoclassical style with eclectic elements. Among the four facades, of greater importance is the one on Alexandras str. The main entrance, centrally situated on the ground floor, is emphasized by four columns, supporting a balcony with balusters on the level of the first floor. Other morphological features that deserve special mention are the large number of regularly spaced windows and the strips accentuating the horizontal articulation of the facades, the rectangular frames of openings and the cornices of the windows. With regards to the floor plan, which is square in shape, it is organized around a central open atrium and a surrounding common passageway and its layout is symmetrical about the axis of the main entrance. Originally, the building operated as an orphanage and its back yard served as a playground. The interior spaces have been subjected to a series of modifications through time in order to adjust to several functions that were later accommodated in the building, such as a nursery school, other social services and the Historical Archives of Corfu. Today the property houses the majority of the departments of the Municipality of Corfu. Bibliography: 1. Μπερτάνης Γεώργιος, 2010, Εκπαιδευτικά κτίρια 19ου- Άρχες 20ου αιώνα.
