DESCRIPTION OF THE BUILDING
The Latin Cathedral of San Giacomo is situated in the central area of the historic Centre, on the eastern side of Dimarchion (Town Hall) Square, which was the town’s social and cultural center during the Venetian rule. The square was surrounded by noteworthy buildings, such as the residence of the Latin Archbishop and the Loggia Nobilei.
The Cathedral was erected in the end of the 16th Century and later on, in 1622, it was restructured and extended. The building suffered major destruction during the bombardments of World War II in 1943 and it was restored in 1963-1970. The building was renovated one last time in 2011.
Great interest was shown in the design of the church, which is characterized by the Baroque-style roof ornamentation, the typical 17th century pediment curve, the denticulated tower and the tall belfry.
